Out of shape!

Oh baby! I am sore! I have only been running two days and I had to take a hot bath last night because my legs are sore. What a wimp! I also did 3 sets of sit ups and push ups during the day. I put dinner on to cook and then while older kids are doing homework and can stir the food or check it and watch the littles, I run around the block which is a mile. That is it. One wimpy mile. I can't wait to be in shape.

Goals for March~
Run every day...and do situps and pushups.
Keep my house clean. Laundry always done and put away and everything always picked up.
Crochet Natalie's afghan and start Jack's.
Write something for practice everyday.
Be sweet.

Trying to decide if I should take this book proposal class at the college...

The Adventure Begins

Our family moved to Montana a year ago. We left a big city and all the big city ways and moved to the mountains and the wild kind of life. The very first thing I noticed when we arrived was the temperature. We drove our moving truck through a cold January night. It was so cold that frost kept building up on the inside of my windows. It was -13 outside and my newborn baby lay asleep in her carseat while the ice froze on her window. We arrived at our new home at 4 am and slept on the floor with no blankets.

We awoke to bitter cold and feet of snow outside. The truck needed to be unloaded so we could return it. Unfortunately for us, the high was -2 that day. We had no coats, no boots, no gloves. We had arrived at the wilderness unprepared. I kept thinking that day that if we had acted this way 100 years ago, we would be dead before the morning. You cannot be unprepared here.

Another thing I noticed right away was how much more hardy you had to be. Shoveling snow and gathering firewood will surely wind you if you are out of shape. It requires much more effort to do simple things here in the winter. I am not in bad shape, but I am not that fit either. I don't want to be winded while shoveling. I want to be up to the task here whether it is pure survival or pleasure. We don't have big malls and movie theaters. The things to do for fun in Montana are all outside. Skiing, skating, snowshoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting. All things that require you to be in shape to enjoy.

I started running this week in order to be up for the challenge. I want to spend this summer learning to do all the things that make living in Montana so awesome. I want to learn to fly fish and shoot a deer, hike a glacier and ski down, anything I want to do. That takes being fit and getting out there and learning. That is my goal this year.

Quitters Anonymous

I am a quitter. There. I said it. I have been a quitter my whole life. I want to do things that are amazing, but I quit in the process because...guess what? Amazing things are hard. They take practice and perseverance and determination. They take passion.

I feel envious of people who do amazing things. As though they possessed the talent and just went with it. As though it didn't require hard work and patience and many failures along the way.

This all struck me yesterday when my youngest son was upset because a classmate is good at everything. I said to him..he is good at basketball because he practices every afternoon. You don't practice so you can't expect to be as good. How true are these words.

Most of the things I have wanted to be good at, I never stuck with long enough to get good. I gave up during the learning process. Sports, sewing, painting, crafts, writing. I just admire things on pinterest and then sigh because I can't do them. Yes, I can, I just quit.

I am 45. I don't want to be a quitter anymore. I started running yesterday and I am going to stick with it until I am good. I am going to write everyday. I am going to continue crocheting which I just taught myself to do. That is my goal for this year..to become a person who does not give up, who never quits, who perseveres. Who knows what I might accomplish?

After seeing how many people waste their lives (without a break: gab, gab, gab---and with all the consequences!) I can better appreciate how necessary and lovable silence is. And I can understand, Lord, why you will make us account for every idle word.

Homemaking

A hundred men may make an encampment, but it takes a woman to make a home.
--chinese proverb

Focus on your home today. What can you do to make it a place of refuge for your family? A good, homecooked meal? Clean, organized spaces? A compassionate ear for listening? Spring is a good time to remake rooms and clean out clutter. Surprise your kids with a picnic lunch and read to them outside.
